15 Father-Son Activities That Do Not Require a Screen

Co-Founder

It is easy to default to screens when you are spending time with your son. Video games, YouTube, movies — they require zero planning and keep everyone entertained. But deep down, you know those are not the moments he will remember when he is older.

Here are 15 activities that actually build connection. None of them require a screen, and most require zero preparation.

Quick Wins (Under 15 Minutes)

1. Thumb wrestling tournament — best of 7, loser does a funny dance. 2. Build the tallest tower possible with whatever is in the room (pillows, books, shoes). 3. Play 20 Questions but only about ridiculous topics ('I am thinking of a type of cheese'). 4. Arm wrestle, but let him win sometimes. The confidence boost is worth it. 5. Teach him one skill you know — a card trick, how to whistle with your fingers, how to tie a specific knot.

Adventure Mode (30-60 Minutes)

6. Mystery drive — let him call left or right at every intersection and see where you end up. 7. Backyard obstacle course using whatever you can find. Time each other. 8. Cook something together that he gets to eat. Pancakes are the universal dad-son cooking project. 9. Go to a hardware store and let him pick a small project to build together. 10. Night walk with flashlights. Everything is more exciting in the dark.

Legendary Status (Memory-Makers)

11. Camp in the backyard or living room. Full setup — sleeping bags, snacks, stories. 12. Yes Day — he gets to make every decision for two hours (within reason). 13. Midnight junk food run. Wake him up at 10pm, drive to get donuts. He will talk about it for years. 14. Write a comic book together. You draw, he writes (or vice versa). 15. Record a 'podcast' together about his favorite topic. Save it. Play it back for him in 10 years.

The Pattern

Notice that the best activities on this list are not expensive or complicated. They are just intentional. You are choosing to be present, choosing to engage, choosing to create a moment instead of consuming content.

That is all quality time really is — choosing your kid over your default.
